"Diet food" not "diet food" any more...

Shakeology comes in Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry,
Greenberry, Tropical Strawberry (Vegan), and
Chocolate (Vegan)
.

,
As you may have figured out now by reading my posts, I'm a runner, I workout regularly and this year I became a Beachbody Coach.

My running career started in 2013 but it wasn't until 2015 that I got introduced to Beachbody after a friend saw that my running was doing great things for me but I needed that extra cross training to push me into a whole new category as a runner.  Since January, I've been using their DVDs and the nutritional program 21 Day Fix, but my favorite part of their company comes in the form of what most people call "chocolate crack" AKA Shakeology.

I've never been one to drink anything more than sports drinks to help my sports performance, but I've fallen in love with Shakeology since starting to drink it.  Not only has it helped me drop almost 15lbs of weight which is making my running easier not only mentally but physically, it's nutritional content helps me feel like I'm fueling my body with something good.  I've pretty much given up my soda habit, and the ice cream and cupcakes that were my favorite desert items have gone away.  When the craving strikes, as corny as it sounds, I reach for Shakeology instead of junk food!

Lately, due to my workout schedule and the kids being out of school for summer, I drink it in the morning for breakfast...

Studies have shown that people who start the day with a protein-rich breakfast consume 200 fewer calories per day. Part of this reason is because the amino acids help dull hunger, leaving you feeling fuller for longer! Shakeology has a whopping 15 grams of protein so drink Shakeology in the AM if you're looking to lose weight! (From the Beachbody.com)

This morning I mixed up a new recipe that I found online and it came out tasting like I drank a Girl Scout Thin Mint cookie!  Normally I would have had coffee with added sugar and some frozen waffles, but today I've started it with something that only tastes great, but its setting me up for a great workout later and keeping me in line to lose the weight I need to lose.

If I had a mascot it would be _________.

MomMe Meltdown's photo.
There's a running blog I've recently started to read and the author has a flying pig as a mascot. He takes it to all his races and posts pictures of it.

<----If I had a mascot it would be big bird.

What's your Mascot? Comment and fill in the blank:
If I had a mascot it would be _________.

Ephiphany...

I had a sort of ephiphany today while listening to Shaun T's Define Your Life podcast.  I came to the realization that I am a Humanities Major.  That may not sound like it makes sense, but let me explain.

From the time I was about 5 years old, I knew that I was going to college.  My parents set up a college fund and from basically my first day of school I knew that I was going.  Most people would KILL for an opporunity like that, but for me it really was a confusing thing.  The confusing part was that my parents didn't care, or should I say, didn't have a preference as to where I went to school or what I studied, just that I go and I graduate.  AGAIN, something that some people would KILL for.  You know what this free-choice left me feeling like?  Lost!

As much as it sounds like a good thing to give someone free reign over their choices, at the same time it gives them TOO many options and I feel now that if I'd had a nudge in ANY direction that I would have been better off!

I started college about 2 months after high school as a Kinesology Major (sports medicine).  At the time I was playing basketball and my ultimate plan was to be an Athletic Trainer and never really leave sports.  I thought that would be my in to be a part of a team because I so desperately felt lost and alone most of my school years.

Growing up, or at least from the time I moved to California, I saw kids around me always having such a great time on their sports teams.  They were like sisters, or at least looked that way from the outside and while I had fun on my sports teams, I never really felt part of a team.  In the town I lived in, soccer was king, and all the kids who were on the elite teams had teammates for life.  They started on the same team around 5 years old and usually were on the same team up until high school graduation.  For an Army brat, who moved about every two years my whole life, having that connection never really was a possibility and I realize now, I never tried to make those connections because I figured they wouldn't last anyway.

Fast forward to Sophomore year when it became increasingly evident that medical and science based majors were not for me.  I took anatomy and physiology and have HORRIBLE short term memory AND have horrible test taking skills which cause me to fail the class twice!

So, I changed my major to English, specifically with the intent of becoming a teacher, more importantly setting myself up with (and I quote) "a generic major" so that when I did get out of college I would be employable by many different fields.

It seems like a really great choice...but you know what it left me with?  Free Choice!  And free choice again left me being lost in a pile of resumes who all had generic skills that could get them through but nothing that would show an employer that I actually had some talent and would be an asset to their company.

I eventually graduated with an English Major with a concentration in Creative Writing and started a California Teaching Credential program.  For reasons beyond my control, I came to find I HATED the whole process of getting a teaching credential and moved again out into the world with free choice, spending the next decade working assistant jobs with big and small companies.  I did ok at my jobs, but really felt like I never could find "that thing" that made me stand apart from any other employee that the company would have hired to my position.

So now, here I am, about to turn 39 this year, and I've joined Team Beachbody and while everyone has been completely great with me, I still feel like a Humanities Major...I have enough skills to get me by, but at the same time I feel like I'm missing "that thing" that everyone else on the team seems to have.  It leaves me feeling like I'm not really a part of the team.  Just like in High School, I've got the uniform, I know how to play the game, but the minute the whistle blows, teammates go and have their friendships while I go home to my life and family without really ever having a full connection with anyone.

So, after this huge PUKE POST, my goal for the next few weeks is to make better and more meaningful connections with people, instead of going through the motions.  The picture I posted about finding people to fan your flames is something I need, but I also think I need to dig deeper and really get to know people, and fan some other people's flames as well.

-----

On a side note, the one place in the world like I've felt that I belong is in the running world, because really we can all cheer each other on, but we all run our races at different paces and we all can celebrate at the finish line together.  (I guess I need to remember to take that approach the rest of my life!)

Deep Thoughts: Meditation for people who don't get it but really need it...

Since beginning my work with Beachbody as a coach, everyone has made it clear that personal development is a big part of becoming a better me and helping others become better too.  As part of this I've started to listen to podcasts: 1) they are free 2) they are really good food for thought.

A few nights ago I listened to Chalene Johnson's podcast called: Meditation for people who dont get it but really need it.  In it she speaks with "The Boston Buddha" who is a normal guy who happens to teach meditation.  It was a great conversation about meditation and how to meditate and since Tuesday I've meditated, or at least attempted to meditate, about five or six times.

Picture this... MomMe laying in bed with the lights off, iPhone on my meditation program and me being peacful.  Hubby gave me a sideways look and asked me what the hell I was doing.  I'm sure most people who meditate get these crazy looks from people because they picture people who meditate as being airheads who are looking for enlightenment.

My meditation why is just to get a few minutes of peace and quiet and center myself so I can handle what is coming next.

During the podcast they talked about doing a 30 day challenge to meditate and I'm going to make an official statement that I'm going to do this for the next 30 days.  I'm going to count yesterday as day 1, since I did two sessions, but for the next 29 days I'll be taking 5 or 10 minutes for myself to meditate or attempt to do it.

Please please please at least read or listen to this podcast.  It might change your mind on what you think meditation is and who people are who meditate.  It can't hurt to take a moment of your day to spend in silence even if you aren't meditating during it.

PS... I'm using the http://stopbreathethink.org/ app for guided meditations.  It's got free ones you can listen to or longer ones you can pay for.  It's been helpful for me and I hope it's helpful to everyone else!

Personality Test

BASIC ANALYSIS RESULTS

Congratulations, you are a blue.

WANT TO SEE YOUR FULL FOUR COLOR ANALYSIS?

MY FULL ANALYSIS

MOTIVE [ Intimacy ]

Blues are motivated by Intimacy. They seek to genuinely connect with others, and need to be understood and appreciated. Everything they do is quality-based. They are loyal friends, employers, and employees. Whatever or whomever they commit to is their sole (and soul) focus. They love to serve and give of themselves freely in order to nurture others' lives.

ABOUT BLUE

Blues have distinct preferences and have the most controlling personality. Their personal code of ethics is remarkably strong and they expect others to live honest, committed lives as well. They enjoy sharing meaningful moments in conversation as well as paying close attention to special life events (e.g. birthdays and anniversaries). Bluesare dependable, thoughtful, and analytical; but can also be self-righteous, worry-prone, and moody. They are "sainted pit-bulls" who never let go of something or someone once they are committed. When you deal with a BLUE, be sincere and make a genuine effort to understand and appreciate them.

Squeezing the Juice...

My #ThirstyThursday post is about squeezing the juice.  Do you remember that movie Encino man where Pauly Shore says "Squeezing the juice"?  I always think of him when I think of juicing.

Our family purchased a juicer this week and so far we've gone through an entire container of juice.  I say this proudly because my husband is addicted to sweet tea and has passed that on to me and a little bit to our kids.  I'm not saying sweet tea is bad, but when consumed by the gallon, it's definitely not contributing to a healthy lifestyle.

My husband has been talking about getting a juicer for months now, but after the weekend and a bet we've made about him getting healthier, he finally convinced me to do it.  When we'd talked about this months ago,I thought when I bought us a Ninja that we could use it for juicing.  I love my Ninja, don't get me wrong, but it's not a juicer.  The one that we got this week is a juicer and only a juicer.

Monday through today my husband has had a HUGE glass of juice either at home (due to the holiday and my daughter's preschool graduation) or at work.  He said that he felt like he got a jolt of energy from drinking the juice and I told him he needs to bring it to work with him to get him through the afternoon slump of time between lunch and dinner.

Today, as our first container of juice was finished, I decided to find a recipe and refill the container.  I clicked around and landed on an article called "Benefits of Cucumber Juice"  Not only was it a great read about Cucumbers, which I had bought a ton of the other day, but there was a great, simple recipe at the bottom.

The container is all set and ready to be consumed.  I'll update with a note about if my husband likes this recipe or not.  I like it, but he's got a pickier palette than I do.

I've also added a Juice Recipe Page on my pinterest account.  Feel free to check it out and send me any of your favorite juicing recipes to add to my collection!

What Fitness Apps/Technology do you use?

At the start of most races that I've run or training runs that I've taken there is always a moment where everyone stops to turn on the app that they use to track their fitness.

So my question to you is, what do you use to track your fitness?

Comment below and let me know!

If you're curious, I do wear a Fitbit and use the Nike+ app.  Since that's the one I use most frequently, my screen name is Patty_Gordon if you want to add me!  Let's run together!

What happens with your fitness data?

I just read an article from The Wall Street Journal called The States Where Fitness Is King which talked about logged fitness minutes from different sports apps.  The article was pretty boring, considering that most of the places they said that logged high fitness minutes were the ususal suspects.

I'm not one to hide my activities online, the question I had though, in this tech age, is... Were you aware that companies like Under Armor (who owns Map My Fitness & Map My Run) uses your data to
Figure out numbers like these?  I assume they use them to figure out where to concentrate sales of certain sports items they sell, but do you care that they are using your info this way?
