Ephiphany...

I had a sort of ephiphany today while listening to Shaun T's Define Your Life podcast.  I came to the realization that I am a Humanities Major.  That may not sound like it makes sense, but let me explain.

From the time I was about 5 years old, I knew that I was going to college.  My parents set up a college fund and from basically my first day of school I knew that I was going.  Most people would KILL for an opporunity like that, but for me it really was a confusing thing.  The confusing part was that my parents didn't care, or should I say, didn't have a preference as to where I went to school or what I studied, just that I go and I graduate.  AGAIN, something that some people would KILL for.  You know what this free-choice left me feeling like?  Lost!

As much as it sounds like a good thing to give someone free reign over their choices, at the same time it gives them TOO many options and I feel now that if I'd had a nudge in ANY direction that I would have been better off!

I started college about 2 months after high school as a Kinesology Major (sports medicine).  At the time I was playing basketball and my ultimate plan was to be an Athletic Trainer and never really leave sports.  I thought that would be my in to be a part of a team because I so desperately felt lost and alone most of my school years.

Growing up, or at least from the time I moved to California, I saw kids around me always having such a great time on their sports teams.  They were like sisters, or at least looked that way from the outside and while I had fun on my sports teams, I never really felt part of a team.  In the town I lived in, soccer was king, and all the kids who were on the elite teams had teammates for life.  They started on the same team around 5 years old and usually were on the same team up until high school graduation.  For an Army brat, who moved about every two years my whole life, having that connection never really was a possibility and I realize now, I never tried to make those connections because I figured they wouldn't last anyway.

Fast forward to Sophomore year when it became increasingly evident that medical and science based majors were not for me.  I took anatomy and physiology and have HORRIBLE short term memory AND have horrible test taking skills which cause me to fail the class twice!

So, I changed my major to English, specifically with the intent of becoming a teacher, more importantly setting myself up with (and I quote) "a generic major" so that when I did get out of college I would be employable by many different fields.

It seems like a really great choice...but you know what it left me with?  Free Choice!  And free choice again left me being lost in a pile of resumes who all had generic skills that could get them through but nothing that would show an employer that I actually had some talent and would be an asset to their company.

I eventually graduated with an English Major with a concentration in Creative Writing and started a California Teaching Credential program.  For reasons beyond my control, I came to find I HATED the whole process of getting a teaching credential and moved again out into the world with free choice, spending the next decade working assistant jobs with big and small companies.  I did ok at my jobs, but really felt like I never could find "that thing" that made me stand apart from any other employee that the company would have hired to my position.

So now, here I am, about to turn 39 this year, and I've joined Team Beachbody and while everyone has been completely great with me, I still feel like a Humanities Major...I have enough skills to get me by, but at the same time I feel like I'm missing "that thing" that everyone else on the team seems to have.  It leaves me feeling like I'm not really a part of the team.  Just like in High School, I've got the uniform, I know how to play the game, but the minute the whistle blows, teammates go and have their friendships while I go home to my life and family without really ever having a full connection with anyone.

So, after this huge PUKE POST, my goal for the next few weeks is to make better and more meaningful connections with people, instead of going through the motions.  The picture I posted about finding people to fan your flames is something I need, but I also think I need to dig deeper and really get to know people, and fan some other people's flames as well.

-----

On a side note, the one place in the world like I've felt that I belong is in the running world, because really we can all cheer each other on, but we all run our races at different paces and we all can celebrate at the finish line together.  (I guess I need to remember to take that approach the rest of my life!)

Deep Thoughts: Meditation for people who don't get it but really need it...

Since beginning my work with Beachbody as a coach, everyone has made it clear that personal development is a big part of becoming a better me and helping others become better too.  As part of this I've started to listen to podcasts: 1) they are free 2) they are really good food for thought.

A few nights ago I listened to Chalene Johnson's podcast called: Meditation for people who dont get it but really need it.  In it she speaks with "The Boston Buddha" who is a normal guy who happens to teach meditation.  It was a great conversation about meditation and how to meditate and since Tuesday I've meditated, or at least attempted to meditate, about five or six times.

Picture this... MomMe laying in bed with the lights off, iPhone on my meditation program and me being peacful.  Hubby gave me a sideways look and asked me what the hell I was doing.  I'm sure most people who meditate get these crazy looks from people because they picture people who meditate as being airheads who are looking for enlightenment.

My meditation why is just to get a few minutes of peace and quiet and center myself so I can handle what is coming next.

During the podcast they talked about doing a 30 day challenge to meditate and I'm going to make an official statement that I'm going to do this for the next 30 days.  I'm going to count yesterday as day 1, since I did two sessions, but for the next 29 days I'll be taking 5 or 10 minutes for myself to meditate or attempt to do it.

Please please please at least read or listen to this podcast.  It might change your mind on what you think meditation is and who people are who meditate.  It can't hurt to take a moment of your day to spend in silence even if you aren't meditating during it.

PS... I'm using the http://stopbreathethink.org/ app for guided meditations.  It's got free ones you can listen to or longer ones you can pay for.  It's been helpful for me and I hope it's helpful to everyone else!

Core Values: Know Them, Live By Them!

By Bruce on May 18, 2015 07:58 am

My oldest son recently received a very high honor: His school's Core Values award. To be recognized as standing out from the crowd, not giving in to peer pressure and living in sync with an established set of core values makes me extremely proud as a father. I want my boys to have core values. Ultimately, I don't care what their political and religious beliefs are, I don't care what they choose as a career, as long as all of these are in alignment with their own core values.
"It's better to know who you are than to know where you are going." – Jim Collins, author
What are core values and why are they important?
Athletes know that strengthening core muscles is vital to all athletic performance. Your abdominal muscles control your balance and posture. In life, it's just as important to strengthen your core values. They define who you are and give you balance and posture as you pursue your dreams.
What are the things you stand for and believe in? Integrity, honesty, respect, accountability, love? If you don't know your core values, I highly encourage you to do some soul searching. I want you to decide what your values are. I want you to be so convinced of them that you own them, that you are able to stand strong in them. It is when you truly own your belief system that you become who you were uniquely created to be.
When you are living in accordance to your core values you feel light. Your soul sings! It gives you energy and happiness that does not come from anything outside you. When you're living contrary to those core values you lose energy. You feel a heaviness and a darkness within. Your soul feels regret in the choices that are made outside of your beliefs. When you are living without regret, you are living in accordance to your values.
My purpose statement is "to love, serve, and add value to the lives of others." Everything I do, everything I write, every podcast I produce are done with my purpose statement in mind. I know that, when I am living according to my purpose and values, I can be happy and confident regardless of my circumstances or the people I am around. I have learned to simply leave situations in which people are behaving in a way that is contrary to my values. It is not a negative judgement against them. It is a protective action for me, and ultimately a gift to them and the world. When I am in sync with my values I improve and everything around me improves. The same is true for you!
You know when you meet someone who is confident in who they are, what they are, and why they exist on this planet! They operate with integrity to themselves. You can tell they are living in accordance with their core values. Positive energy radiates from them. They are not seeking approval from others. They have found happiness within.
When you live according to your core values, you stand out from the crowd. You are different and people notice. Sometimes this is uncomfortable. Be strong and believe in yourself. Know what you believe so you can stand on your own despite peer pressure. You will ultimately be happier when you are true to yourself in every situation.
Let me be candid. I am not perfect. My friends and family know me. They know my shortcomings, my mistakes, and my failures. I spent so much of my life living a lie and telling lies that it took me a long time to get back to the truth. We are human. None of us are perfect. We see evidence of core values within ourselves when we recognize we have strayed and take steps to get back into alignment. If you are doing something right now that is not in keeping with your core values, it's time to realign. I love a line from the song Collide by Howie Day, "even the best fall down sometimes". And it's true.
"Man's greatest glory lies not in never falling, but in rising every time he falls." – Vince Lombardy
If you are living outside your core values – take a breath and get back up. Start living in accordance with your core values. You can do this! Every single day is a day to start over. Every day is a day you can attempt to make yourself a better person than you were yesterday. You are responsible for your actions and behaviors – own them! Change them! Make right what can be made right, and let the rest go. You can't change how other people feel. All you can do is change you.
The overwhelming majority of my life coaching clients are struggling because they have spent most of their lives trying to be what other people expected them to be. My job is to help them tap into who they truly are and start living in sync with that – to be the fullest expressions of who they were created to be.
Know your values, know what your non-negotiables are, and know what your deal breakers are. Be willing to walk away in social or professional situations. That can be awkward, but it's better than compromising your values. Learn to find peace and contentment within yourself.
Know your core values, know yourself, and love yourself.
